The Gift Card module on the Quickvee POS Android app lets cashiers issue new gift cards to customers and accept gift cards as a payment method on regular sales. Gift cards are stored as a balance tied to a unique card number (printed on the physical card and barcode-scannable). Issuance is recorded as a sale on the register, and redemption appears as a payment method alongside Cash, Credit, Debit, EBT, Loyalty, and Store Credit.
Access paths:
-
Issue a Gift Card: Register → enter amount → tap Issue Gift Card → Load Gift Card modal
-
Redeem a Gift Card (payment): Register → ring up sale → tap Pay → Balance screen → tap Gift Card payment button
Issuing a gift card
When a customer wants to purchase a gift card, the cashier loads a value onto a physical gift card (or assigns the value to a manually entered card number) and rings up the sale.
Step 1 — Enter the amount on the register
-
Tap the numeric keypad to enter the gift card load amount (e.g. tap
1,0,0for$100.00). The amount displays in the center of the register at$100.00. -
Do not select a category or product — the amount alone is enough for gift card issuance.
Always enter the amount before tapping Issue Gift Card. If the amount is $0.00 when Issue Gift Card is tapped, the system rejects the action — gift card amount must be greater than zero.
Step 2 — Tap Issue Gift Card
In the right-hand action column (between the keypad and the cart panel), tap Issue Gift Card. The action column shows these options:

Step 4 — Cart updated
After tapping Next, the gift card is added to the cart panel on the right side of the register as:

The cart shows:

A trash icon appears next to the line item in case the cashier needs to remove it before payment.
Step 5 — Pay for the gift card
Tap Pay (1 Items) $100.00 (blue, bottom-right). The Balance/payment screen opens — this is where the customer pays for the gift card itself, using any normal payment method:

Quick Cash buttons ($100, $101, $110, $120) are available for fast cash entry.
Non-Cash Adjustment applies to gift card purchases just like any other sale — if Non-Cash Adjustment is enabled at the store level, Credit/Debit prices show the surcharge applied ($103.50 for a $100.00 gift card).
Once payment is collected, the gift card is active and ready to use at any of the merchant's locations for redemption.
Redeeming a gift card (as payment)
When a customer wants to pay for a sale using a gift card, the cashier rings up the sale normally and then selects Gift Card as the payment method on the Balance screen.
Step 1 — Ring up the sale
Add products to the cart on the Register screen as usual. Tap Pay when ready to take payment.
Step 2 — Balance screen — Tap Gift Card

Tap Gift Card. A modal prompts the cashier to scan or enter the gift card number — the system then looks up the balance and applies it toward the order total.
Step 3 — Apply the gift card balance

|
Gift card balance = $0.00 / not found |
An error is shown — the cashier can scan a different card or close the modal |
Partial payments are supported. A gift card can pay part of a sale and another payment method can finish it.
Gift card cannot go negative. The system validates the gift card balance against the amount applied — if the cashier tries to redeem more than the available balance, the system caps the redemption at the actual balance.
Gift card payment is recorded separately in the order summary, the receipt, and reports — distinct from cash, card, and other payment types.

Gift card activity history (web backend)
Issued and redeemed gift cards appear in the merchant's web backend under the customer profile (if a customer was attached) and in the dedicated Gift Cards module under Loyalty Program. The backend shows:
-
Total Issued — total dollar amount of all gift cards loaded in a period
-
Total Redeemed — total dollar amount of all gift cards used as payment
-
Balance — remaining unredeemed value across active gift cards
-
Per-card history — issuance date, redemption transactions, and current balance per card number
This article covers the POS register flow only — for full gift card management on the web backend (search by card number, view per-card history, manually adjust balances), refer to the Gift Cards (Web Backend) article.
Important notes
A gift card can be paid for using any non-EBT method. EBT Cash and EBT Food cannot be used to purchase gift cards — federal SNAP rules prohibit it.
A customer does not need to be attached to issue a gift card. Walk-in customers can buy gift cards. To track gift card activity per customer, attach the customer record to the sale before issuing.
The card number is the unique identifier. Two gift cards with the same number cannot exist — the system blocks duplicates at issuance.
Gift card issuance is excluded from Product Profitability reports. Gift card sales are not treated as merchandise — they appear in the Gift Card report instead. This prevents inflated profit figures from non-merchandise sales.
Loyalty points are not earned on gift card purchases. When a customer buys a gift card, no loyalty points are credited for that line item.
Gift card sales appear on the receipt with the card number and dollar value. The receipt also shows the new balance after the transaction.
Validation is enforced. A gift card cannot be issued for $0.00 — the amount must be greater than zero.
Sort and search. The Gift Card management screen on the web supports sorting by issue date, balance, and card number, and searching by card number.
Coupons and discounts do not apply to gift card line items. A coupon, BOGO, or Mix & Match deal cannot reduce the price of a gift card being issued — the gift card sells at face value.
Gift card balance never goes negative. Earlier split-payment scenarios that produced a -$0.01 balance have been corrected — the system caps redemption at the actual balance.
